Westinghouse Electric Company is a world leader in the global nuclear marketplace and is proud to be at the forefront of the UK nuclear industry. Our core UK business includes new nuclear build, nuclear decontamination, decommissioning, remediation & waste management, operating plant business and nuclear fuel and component manufacturing. The Westinghouse AP1000® nuclear reactor has completed the U.K. Generic Design Assessment (GDA) is now fully licenced for U.K. deployment and is considered by many to be the safest, most efficient and reliable nuclear reactor design currently available in the world.
Westinghouse’s Springfields nuclear licenced site, near Preston has been safely manufacturing nuclear fuel and associated products for over 70 years and has the facilities to manufacture fuel for most types of nuclear reactor worldwide. Springfields was the first plant in the world to manufacture nuclear fuel for commercial power stations and has produced several million fuel rods, supplying products and services to reactors in 11 countries. Springfields fuels the reactors, which provide up to 22% of the total electricity generated in the UK.
We are proud of our links and involvement with our local community, to which we owe much of our success. We are therefore extremely pleased to be sponsoring the ‘Inspirational Teaching Award’. We appreciate that we need teachers who inspire in their students a love of learning, encourage them to pursue excellence, and give them the skills and enthusiasm that are needed in the world of work. This is especially important in the nuclear industry to support the skills needed for next generation of nuclear power generation in the UK. This is why Westinghouse’s Springfields site hosts curriculum-linked school visits for over 2000 pupils each year.
